Entrepreneurship. Since I was very little this word was always passing right by my face, but I never registered what it meant until much later in life. In my head, I would picture men in suits and ties, sitting at a desk writing contracts, but that was as far as it went. Back then, the only worry I had was if I was ever going to be bored. These days, it doesn’t seem that there is even a second left to ask myself if I’m bored. The point here is that each passing day annexes another definition of what the word “adult” means. I cannot say that I have the drive of a 30 year old, the confidence of a 40 year old, nor the wisdom of a 50 year old, but being able to understand these stages gives me the resolve of a 5 year old determined to become an astronaut.
One opportunity leads me to the next, and it can become overwhelming at times, but I have resolved to imagine that I am a 90 year old man who has been granted the wish of travelling back in time and doing all the things I had regretted not doing. That way I’ll treat every chance as if it were my second chance to do it, and I can save those second chances for when I really need them.
Entrepreneurship is not an occupation. You don’t go to an entrepreneurship office, drop off your resume, and have an entrepreneurship interview. It is something you work on every day. There are no days off. It is very important to understand that before you become an entrepreneur, you must first decide to become one. You cannot begin that kind of lifestyle without first making that decision as you won’t have a set consistency. The decision to live an entrepreneurial life comes with the decision to not wanting an average lifestyle. If you are the type of person who is stuck in 5pm traffic on the highway, thinking how ridiculous it is that everyone’s life is programmed in such a way that everyone is stuck in the same strip of asphalt at the same time, day in and day out, then you are a person who has a need to take control of your own life. The average population does not understand that if you fail at something, it is only a prompt to try again and try harder. I’m sure you’ve heard the fun fact that Decca Records rejected The Beatles because they “have no future in show business”. My first thought when I heard that was, “Wow, that record company must have been really stupid!” But in retrospect, that should not have been my first thought. What should have come to mind was that maybe The Beatles had to make some changes that would later lead them to their success. It is only up to you to decide if your dream is at its end or if it’s just beginning. The only thing you own in this world is your time, and if you are out leasing it to someone else, you are not getting it back. So if you are in a situation where you are giving your time, make sure that you are working towards something that is going to give you a surplus of time in the not so distant future.
I have made this decision for myself because I know that I do not want an average life. My father is my biggest inspiration in life. A man who came from the absolute poorest of the poor in Colombia had the drive to rise above scarcity and ignorance and become the man who made a successful company in the U.S. The thing about poverty is that it is a cycle. And breaking a cycle that goes back centuries takes a tremendous amount of strength. My father is a man who lets no one stop him. When I work with him, he is the one who has more energy than me. If you spend more than 20 minutes with us, you would think he is younger than I am. And that is something I have heard about my dad all my life. Sometimes as a compliment, other times as an insult. He is the definition of an entrepreneur because he never stops creating. His mind never stops turning. It’s an incredible thing to watch him come up with random ideas from something as simple as a walk in the park. If I ever become half the man he is, I’d be a well-accomplished man.
As for you, only you can ask yourself if you have this burning desire inside you. Understand that it may be buried under a pile of dirt, but only you can decide to do what it takes to overcome that. You are your only obstacle and you are your worst enemy. Work on yourself first, and you will start to notice that all changes in your life come from within. One day you will look back at this moment and remember it as the beginning of something great.
